New Zealand rolled over by Afridi

Abu Dhabi: Shahid Afridi shone with bat and ball to steer Pakistan to an emphatic 138-run victory against New Zealand in the first One-day International in Abu Dhabi for a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Buzz up!
Afridi smashed 70 off 50 balls and then claimed two wickets.

Electing to bat first, Pakistan recovered from an awful start to pile up 287 for nine in their stipulated fifty overs.

At one stage Pakistan were in trouble at 75/4, But Latif (64) and Afridi added 101 for the fifth wicket and resurrected the Pak innings.

Later, Kamran Akmal chipped in with an unbeaten 67, including four sixes, to lead Pakistan to an imposing total.

In reply, New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals and were bowled out for 149 in 39.2 overs. The only resistance came from Aaron Redmond (52) and Daniel Vettori (38). New Zealand lost their last five wickets for just 10 runs within five overs.

The second game in the three-match series is also in Abu Dhabi on Friday.

The three-match ODI series was relocated to Abu Dhabi after New Zealand refused to tour Pakistan over security fears.

Zaheer sparkles on comeback

Zaheer Khan was the cynosure of all eyes at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium here on Tuesday.

Considering the man was making a comeback after a prolonged shoulder injury, his performance was the highlight of the day. At stumps his figures read 3 for 45, proving that he was not only fit but in fine form.

He along with fellow pacer Ajit Agarkar (4 for 41) helped Mumbai keep Punjab down to 242 for 9 on the first day.

Punjab skipper Ankur Kakkar won the toss and elected to bat on a good batting surface. Asked to bowl on a flat track, the visiting bowlers stuck to the task and kept Punjab batsmen under check right throughout the day.

On a day, which was dominated by the Mumbai bowlers, Ravi Inder Singh's knock of 104 (17x4; 1x6) was the only saving grace for Punjab.

Earlier, the hosts were pegged down when the Zaheer Khan got rid of opener Sunny Sohal with scoreboard reading just 12 runs. Sohal was caught behind by Vinayak Samant for two runs.

The next man, Uday Kaul, along with Ravi Inder Singh put up 68 runs for the second wicket, highest of the innings, before the former was sent packing by Agarkar on 28 runs.

Taruwar Kohli failed to make any impression. He fell victim to Zaheer.

Having tasted success, Zaheer started breathing fire and got rid of Pankaj Dharmani, who scored just 9 runs, and left the home team reeling at 120 for 4 in 41.6 overs. Agarkar bowled with purpose. The seasoned bowler trapped Punjab skipper Ankur Kakkar in front of the wicket. Batting well with the lower order he completed his well-deserved century with a fine boundary on the off side.

ICC Cricket World CUP -2011

The 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup will be the tenth Cricket World Cup, and will be hosted by three South Asian Test cricket playing countries; India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It will be Bangladesh's first time co-hosting a Cricket World Cup. The World Cup will use cricket's One Day International format, with fourteen national cricket teams scheduled to compete. The World Cup will take place during the months of February and March 2011, with the first match being played on 19 February 2011.

The World Cup was originally to have been hosted by Pakistan as well, but in the wake of the 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka national cricket team in Lahore, the capital of the Pakistani province of Punjab, the International Cricket Council (ICC) were forced to strip Pakistan of its hosting rights. The headquarters of the organising committee were originally situated in Lahore, but have now been shifted to Mumbai. Pakistan was supposed to hold 14 matches, including one semi-final.

French Title won by Federer

Federer Roger Federer swept past Swede Robin Soderling 6-1 7-6 6-4 to clinch his first French Open title on Sunday and complete the full set of grand slam crowns. The Swiss equalled Pete Sampras's record of 14 grand slams, becoming only the sixth man to win all four major tournaments after sealing victory in just under two hours. "It was really not easy to deal with my emotions," said the 27-year-old Federer, who lost to world number one Rafael Nadal in the three previous finals.

"It might be the greatest victory of my career." The 23rd-seeded Soderling had ended Nadal's four-year reign on the Paris clay in the fourth round. "To me, he is the best player in history," the Swede said. Federer, the second man after Andre Agassi to win all four grand slam titles on all surfaces, started the match confidently by racing into a 4-0 lead. Soderling held serve for 4-1 but Federer, who had never lost to Soderling in nine previous matches, kept up the pressure and clinched the first set on the Swede's serve with a crosscourt passing shot. BRIEFLY INTERRUPTED The match was briefly interrupted after a man came on to Centre Court with a red and blue flag during the fourth game of the second set.

He jumped from the stand opposite the media box and approached Federer, touching him with the flag and trying to put a hat on his head. Leaping over the net towards Soderling, the man was tackled by Roland Garros security officers and carried away from the court.

Federer lost three points in a row after the incident as Soderling levelled for 2-2. "It was clear that he was not going to do anything to me, but what is 'normally' nowadays?," Federer told French TV channel France 2. "It is difficult to stay calm in such conditions.

Maybe I should have taken a two-minute break after that game." Both players held serve to a tiebreak which Federer cruised through 7-1 after serving four aces. The Swiss broke in the first game of the third set when his opponent sent a forehand wide and he never found a solution to turn the situation around.

England beat Pakistan

England England stayed afloat in the ICC World Twenty20 tournament after humbling Pakistan by 48 runs in their must-win Group B match at the Oval in London on Sunday.

Going into the match, England's chances of making the super-eight stage hung by a thread following the humiliating defeat to the Netherlands in their opening match on Friday. But, facing early elimination from the home event, their top-order responded magnificently as they posted a challenging 185 for 5 after being sent in to bat.
Kevin Pietersenmade a timely return to the side and scored a masterly 58. He was well-supported by man of the match Luke Wright (34) and Owais Shah
England then restricted Pakistan to 137 for 7 in their 20 overs.

Though skipper Younus Khan held one end up with a defiant unbeaten 46, Pakistan failed to recover from a top-order collapse.

Stuart Broad (3 for 17) caused the early damage by dismissing Kamran Akmal (6) and Salman Butt (28) with consecutive deliveries in the sixth over after Dimitri Mascarenhas had got rid off Ahmad Shahzad (4).

Younus and Shoaib Malik (20) offered resistance and revived the innings with a 46-run partnership, but the required run-rate soared over 12 runs per over.
And once Malik was caught behind off Wright, Younus was left stranded as his teammates came and departed in a hurry.

Earlier, Pietersen and Wright shared a 53-run stand for the second wicket to set the tone for England's innings with a 16-ball 34.

Pietersen also added 66 for the third wicket with Owais Shah (33) after Pakistan put England in to bat.

At one stage the hosts were heading towards a 200-plus score but Saeed Ajmal's double strike the 17th over pegged them back.

INDIA win First Match against Bangladesh

With two upsets already witnessed in the tournament, defending champions India ensured they were not caught off-guard as they came up with a thumping 25-run victory over Bangladesh in the ICC World Twenty20 [Images], in Nottingham, on Saturday.

Bangladesh's hopes of repeating their 2007 50-over World Cup upset failed as they could put up only 155 for eight in reply to India's massive 180 for five.

Pragyan Ojha vindicated Mahendra Singh Dhoni's decision to play two spinners as he finished with magnificent figures of four for 21 in his four overs. He was deservedly named man of the match.

For Bangladesh, opener Junaid Siddique smashed a quick 41 from 22 deliveries, but the rest of the batsmen failed to deliver.

Earlier, Gautam Gambhir played the sheet anchor role to perfection with a solid half-century, while Yuvraj Singh [Images] provided the finishing touches to the innings with some powerful strokes in the final overs, as India posted a healthy total.

Gambhir hit a steady 50 from 46 deliveries to provide solid platform, before Yuvraj stole the thunder on an otherwise gloomy day with a blazing knock of 41 from just 18 deliveries, inclusive of three boundaries and four sixes.

In the day's other matches earlier, New Zealand beat Scotland by seven wickets while the West Indies won by as many against Australia .
